A Texas Superstar is a plant that has been tested extensively and proven to be an outstanding performer in our Texas landscapes. The programme is a partnership between the Texas A&M University Agriculture Program and the ornamental plant industry in Texas, and only the most reliable and best-looking plants make the grade.
To be selected, a plant must be attractive and useful to the gardening public; must be unique and offer desirable ornamental characteristics, such as the ability to perform in the heat of a Texas summer, or pest resistance; must consistently perform well for most Texas consumers regardless of their gardening expertise and growing location; must be as pest resistant as possible, with deer proof an added bonus; and must be able to be propagated and mass-produced in sufficient numbers to meet demand.
