Roses

Milberger’s regularly carries over fifty varieties of antique and modern roses recommended by Texas A&M and the San Antonio Rose Society.

These are the rose varieties that Milberger’s stocks on a regular basis. Because we may sell out, or specific stock may be unavailable, not all varieties are available all of the time.

Feeding, all year round

Roses are heavy feeders. Your feeding programme, like your spraying, should be done regularly, and the bed watered thoroughly before and after food has been applied.

From January through February, as the weather and ground warm up around mid to late February, organic fertilisers may be applied: give each large bush one to two cups of a mixture of alfalfa meal, cottonseed meal, fish meal and blood meal, scratched in lightly and watered in well.

March through May, the initial feeding should be chemical, applied when spring pruning is completed. Give each hybrid tea or other large bush one tablespoon of soluble fertiliser dissolved in a gallon of water; for miniatures use one teaspoon per gallon. Mature climbers should be given double the amount given to hybrid teas.

June through August, timed-release fertilisers make a summer-long feeding possible in one application. Feed each average sized bush at least three or four ounces, worked lightly into the soil, and water thoroughly. If you would rather not use that type of product, continue with a water soluble food twice a month, or a monthly application of dry food.
